This makes its early history a bit of a mystery for researchers. Many people believe it comes from an ancient tongue called Illyrian. This idea makes sense because of where the language is spoken. Still, experts cannot prove it for sure. We know so little about the Illyrian language that it is hard to test.

The Shkumbin River in central Albania acts as a dividing line. People in the north speak Gheg varieties. People in the south speak Tosk varieties. These two groups have different ways of making sounds. Standard Albanian, which is used for official writing, is based mostly on the Tosk dialect. This standard version helps people from different areas understand each other.

Learning about the history of written Albanian is quite interesting. The first time the language was mentioned in writing was in 1284. This was in a witness testimony from the Republic of Ragusa. Later, in 1332, a friar named Gulielmus Adea wrote a letter. He mentioned that Albanians used the Latin alphabet for their writing.

The oldest piece of modern Albanian that still exists is from 1462. Because it was the last branch to appear in written records, its origins remain a topic of debate. This long history shows how the language has survived through many changes.

Today, about 7.5 million people speak Albanian around the world. It is the official language in Albania and Kosovo.

It is also a co-official language in North Macedonia and Montenegro. Many people speak it as a minority language in places like Italy, Croatia, and Romania. In Greece, there are about 450,000 speakers. In Switzerland, it is the sixth most spoken language with over 176,000 native speakers. These numbers show how many different communities rely on the language every day.

Albanian speakers live in many different places, which is called a diaspora. You can find large groups in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania. In the United States and Canada, there are about 250,000 speakers. Many live on the East Coast in cities like New York and Boston.
