Speaking Vietnamese involves using special musical sounds called tones. It is a tonal language, which means the pitch of your voice changes the meaning of a word.

There are six different tones used in the language. These tones can sound level, sharp, asking, deep, heavy, or tumbling. The way these tones sound can change depending on where you are. For example, people in Hanoi might use different pitch qualities than people in Ho Chi Minh City.

This used Chinese characters and special local characters to show native words. Today, Vietnamese uses an alphabet based on Latin script. This alphabet was officially adopted in the early 20th century during French rule. It uses special marks called diacritics to show the different tones.

This is called Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary, and it makes up about one-third of the language. It can even be 60% of the words in formal texts. The language also has many words from French. This happened because France ruled Vietnam in the late 19th century. You can find French influence in words for things like shirts or train stations.

Linguists have studied how the language grew from ancient times. They believe the Austroasiatic language family began spreading around 2000 BC.

The very old version of the language was not tonal. It had different types of syllables and many consonant clusters. Over time, the language changed as people moved and met new groups. As certain sounds disappeared, new tones were created to take their place. This process is called tonogenesis, and it helped create the unique sounds of modern Vietnamese.
