Polish is a beautiful West Slavic language. It is the official language of Poland. More than 39.7 million people speak it as their first language.

It is the sixth most spoken language in the European Union. People also speak Polish in many other parts of the world. This happens because many people moved from Poland to new lands. You can find Polish speakers in Canada, Brazil, and Australia. Millions of people also speak it in the United States.

In some American states, like Illinois, many people speak Polish at home.

Writing in Polish uses a special version of the Latin alphabet. The standard alphabet has 32 letters in total. It uses the 26 letters found in English but adds nine more. These extra letters include special characters like ą or ę. These two are called nasal vowels. They use a small mark called a reversed diacritic hook called an ogonek.

Interestingly, Polish does not use the letters Q, V, or X. The language also has seven different grammatical cases. This means the endings of words change depending on how they are used. It also has many palatal consonants, which are sounds made with the tongue near the roof of the mouth.

Polish has a very long and proud history. It began to emerge as its own language around the 10th century. A ruler named Mieszko I united many tribes in the Vistula and Oder basins. In the year 966, he accepted baptism. This brought Western Christianity and the Latin alphabet to Poland.

Before this, Polish was only a spoken language. The Book of Henryków contains the oldest known written sentence in Polish. It was written around 1280 by a monk named Peter. The sentence says, "let me grind, and you have a rest." This book is so important that it is on the UNESCO Memory of the World list.

Many different groups of people have helped shape the language over time. In the 1500s, many books were published in Polish. This period is called the Golden Age of Polish literature.

During this time, the way people wrote became more similar across the country. Polish was also influenced by other languages like Latin, Italian, French, and German. It even took many words from Yiddish. Even today, there are different regional dialects. Some people in places like Silesia or Kashubia speak in their own unique ways.

Learning Polish helps you connect with a huge global community. It is a language that links people across many different borders. In Europe, it is spoken in parts of Germany, Czechia, and Ukraine.

Because of history, it is also a major language in many distant countries. Even in the United States, some banks offer services in Polish. This shows how much the language is still used today. Whether through old books or modern talk, Polish carries the stories of its people. It remains a strong and living way to share ideas and culture.
