The Austroasiatic languages are a huge family of ways to speak.

About 117 million people use these languages every day. Most of these speakers use the Vietnamese language. Vietnamese is the national language of Vietnam. Khmer is the national language of Cambodia. The Mon language is also very important in Myanmar and Thailand. Some other languages, like Santali, are recognized in India. Many other groups speak these languages as smaller minority groups. This large family helps connect many different people across Asia.

These languages have a very special way they sound. Many words follow a pattern called sesquisyllabic. This means a word has a small, quiet part followed by a full, strong part. Most of these languages use many different vowel sounds. Some languages also use a special way of making sounds with the voice. For example, some use a breathy voice or a creaky voice. Vietnamese even uses tones to change what words mean. Khmer keeps a structure that sounds more like the very old languages.

Experts are still studying where these languages began long ago. One idea is that they started in southern China. Another idea is that they began in the Red River Delta. Some researchers think the homeland was near the Mekong River valley.

This is called the Mekong Riverine hypothesis. This theory suggests the languages spread out using the river paths. It is a big puzzle that scientists are still solving today.

There are many different branches within this language family. Ethnologue says there are 168 different Austroasiatic languages. These are grouped into thirteen different families. Some people used to group them into just two: Mon-Khmer and Munda. Now, experts have many different ideas about how they fit together. The Munda languages are found in India and parts of Bangladesh. The Khmer and Vietnamese languages are part of the Mon-Khmer group.

Learning about these languages is like looking at a map of history.

By looking at how words change, we can see how people moved. For example, the name Austroasiatic was made by Wilhelm Schmidt. He used the Latin word for "South" to name the group. These languages show us how cultures have met and changed over thousands of years. They tell a story of how people lived and traveled across the land.
