The Khmer script is a beautiful way to write the Khmer language. This is the official language of Cambodia.

People also use it to write Pali for Buddhist ceremonies. It is an abugida, which is a type of writing system. In this system, each consonant has its own built-in vowel sound. These sounds are known as the a-series or the o-series. Writing is done from left to right in a continuous flow. Words in a sentence usually run together without any spaces.

Learning to read Khmer involves looking at how letters stack. Most consonants have a special subscript form. In Khmer, this is called the "foot of a letter."

When two or three consonants make a cluster, they are stacked. The main consonant sits on top. The second or third consonant is written in a smaller form underneath. This helps show sounds that are pronounced one after another. Most subscripts look like a smaller version of the main letter. This makes the script look very organized and unique.

This writing system has a very long and interesting history. It was adapted from the Pallava script used in southern India. That script came from the older Tamil-Brahmi script.

The oldest dated Khmer inscription was found in the year 611. It was discovered in the Angkor Borei District of Takéo Province. Many old stone carvings have been found across the former Khmer Empire. These include places in Laos, Thailand, and the Mekong Delta. People used different styles for sacred carvings and general use.

There are many specific details within the modern script. While there were once 35 consonants, modern Khmer uses 33.

Some letters are now obsolete, meaning they are no longer used. Vowel sounds are often shown using dependent vowels. These are extra marks that go around a consonant. They can be placed above, below, or to the side. The way you say a vowel depends on the consonant it touches. The script also includes its own special numbers and punctuation marks.

Khmer script is connected to many other cultures in Asia. The Thai and Lao scripts actually came from an older version of Khmer. They grew from the Sukhothai script over time.

Even the name "Khmer Script" has a long history. An inscription from the late 9th century shows the name in Old Khmer. This was during the reign of King Yasovarman I. It proves that people had a special name for their writing long ago. This script remains a proud part of Cambodian identity today.
