The Thai script is a beautiful way to write many languages.

People use it for Thai and Southern Thai. It is not a true alphabet like English. Instead, it is called an abugida. This means the main letters show consonant sounds. Small marks called diacritics show the vowel sounds.

These marks can go above, below, or beside a consonant. You can even find them on both sides at once. This system helps people write the sounds of their spoken words. It is a vital part of how people share stories and ideas.

Learning to write in Thai involves many different symbols.

There are 44 consonant symbols in the script. These 44 letters actually represent 21 different sounds. There are also 16 vowel symbols. These can combine to make at least 32 different vowel forms. You also need four tone diacritics to show pitch.

These marks tell you if a word is high, mid, or low. Consonants are written horizontally from left to right. This makes the writing look very organized and flowing. It is a very careful way to build every single word.

The history of this script goes back many centuries.

It came from the Old Khmer script. That script was rooted in the South Indian Pallava alphabet. The earliest Thai script was called the Sukhothai script. Many people look at the Ram Khamhaeng Inscription from 1292. This stone carving is a famous example of early writing.

However, some scholars have different ideas about its age. They point to the Wat Bang Sanuk Inscription from 1219. This means the script might be even older than we thought.

There are many interesting rules in the Thai writing system.

Many words in Thai come from Sanskrit and Pali. These are very old languages from long ago. The Thai script kept extra letters to match those old spellings. This means some letters are actually silent. For example, the word for moon is spelled with silent letters.

You might see letters that look the same but sound different. This happens because the way people speak changed over time. This makes the relationship between spelling and sound quite complex.

Thai writing looks very different from the Latin letters we use.

There are no upper-case or lower-case letters in Thai. You also do not see spaces between words. Instead, people use a blank space to show a major pause.

You might see commas or periods to mark smaller pauses. To help children learn, every consonant has a special name. The name often starts with the sound of the letter. For example, the letter for egg is called kho khai. This makes it much easier to remember each symbol.
