Thai script

The Thai script is a sophisticated writing system used for Thai, Southern Thai, and several other languages in Thailand.

It is technically classified as an abugida rather than a true alphabet. In an abugida, the primary characters represent consonant sounds. Vowels are added using diacritical marks that wrap around the consonant. These marks can appear above, below, to the left, or to the right of the base letter.

This system allows a single consonant to change its sound significantly based on its accompanying marks. This complexity makes the script a vital tool for capturing the unique sounds of the Thai language.

To understand how the script works, one must look at its many components. The system contains 44 consonant symbols that represent 21 distinct consonant sounds.

There are also 16 vowel symbols, which can combine to form at least 32 different vowel forms. Additionally, the script uses four tone diacritics to indicate pitch. Writing is performed horizontally from left to right. A unique feature is that the absence of a vowel diacritic implies an 'a' or 'o' sound. This layered structure requires careful attention to how each symbol interacts with its neighbors.

Consonants in the Thai script are categorized into three distinct classes: middle, high, and low.

These designations are not random; they reflect the phonetic qualities of the sounds in Old Thai. Middle class consonants were originally voiceless unaspirated stops. High class consonants were voiceless aspirated stops or voiceless fricatives. Low class consonants were originally voiced. While historical sound changes have obscured some of these original phonetic traits, the classes remain essential. They are used today to determine the base accent and tone of a syllable.

The history of the script is a journey of adaptation and evolution. It is derived from the Old Khmer script, which itself has roots in the South Indian Pallava alphabet.

The earliest version was the Sukhothai script. The Ram Khamhaeng Inscription, dated to 1292, is a famous early example of this writing. However, some scholars suggest the script might be older. They point to the Wat Bang Sanuk Inscription, which dates to approximately 1219. Over time, the script was adapted to include tone markers to record tonal features not found in its source languages.

The relationship between spelling and sound in Thai is quite complex due to historical linguistic shifts. Many Thai words are borrowed from Sanskrit and Pali.

To preserve the original spelling of these loanwords, the Thai script includes "duplicate" letters. These letters represent sounds that exist in Sanskrit or Pali but are identical in Thai. This often results in silent letters that are written but not spoken. For example, the word for "moon" contains letters that are silent in modern Thai pronunciation. This preservation shows the deep respect for the linguistic roots of the culture.

Another major complexity involves the way tones are determined. A tone is influenced by the consonant class and the length of the vowel.

For instance, middle class consonants can take specific tone marks to produce different pitches. If a high class consonant is followed by a low class consonant, they form a digraph. In these cases, the rules for the higher class consonant often apply. This intricate web of rules ensures that the script can represent the specific musicality of the spoken language. It requires learners to master both the symbols and the underlying phonetic logic.

Thai writing also differs from Latin-based systems in its visual structure. There are no upper-case or lower-case forms in Thai script.

Furthermore, spaces are not typically used between words. Instead, blank spaces are used to mark major pauses in a sentence. Small pauses may be marked by commas or periods. The script also uses specific symbols for abbreviations and parentheses. To help students memorize the 44 consonants, each is paired with an acrophonic word. For example, the letter 'kho khai' uses the word 'khai', meaning egg, to help the learner remember the sound.
