Devanagari is a major writing system used across the Indian subcontinent.

It is a left-to-right abugida, which is a type of segmental writing system. In an abugida, consonant-vowel sequences are written as a unit. This script serves as an official writing system for both India and Nepal. It is currently the fourth most widely adopted writing system in the world. Over 120 different languages use Devanagari for communication. Hindi is the most popular language written with these characters.

The script is highly valued for its ability to reflect the exact pronunciation of a language.

The structure of Devanagari is defined by specific visual and phonetic rules. One of its most recognizable features is the shirorekha. This is a horizontal line that runs along the top of full letters.

Most characters have symmetrical, rounded shapes that fit within squared outlines. The script is unicameral, meaning it has no concept of capital or lowercase letters. The system consists of 48 primary characters. This includes 14 vowels and 34 consonants. The arrangement of these letters follows a phonetic principle called the varnamala, or "garland of letters." This organization is based on the manner and place of articulation for each sound.

Devanagari uses various diacritics to modify sounds. For example, the virāma, or halanta, is a mark that expresses the absence of a vowel after a consonant.

Vowels can appear in an independent form or as a diacritic attached to a consonant. The script also uses a special mark called an anusvara to represent nasal sounds. There is also a post-vocalic voiceless glottal fricative represented by the visarga. In some languages, like Hindi, specific marks distinguish between different types of nasalization. These precise marks ensure that the written word matches the spoken sound perfectly.

The history of Devanagari is a long chain of evolution. It is a descendant of the ancient Brāhmī script from the 3rd century BCE. This ancient script evolved into the Nāgarī script.

Devanāgarī and Nandināgarī eventually emerged from that lineage. The script was in regular use by the 8th century CE. It achieved its modern, standardized form by approximately 1000 CE. The name itself comes from Sanskrit. It combines words to mean "script of the divine city" or "script of the city of God." This reflects its deep connection to urban and religious traditions.

Historical evidence shows the script's wide influence over many centuries. In the 1st to 4th centuries CE, inscriptions in Gujarat showed the developing Sanskrit Nāgarī script. By the 11th century, the Udayagiri inscriptions in Madhya Pradesh recorded Sanskrit in this style.

In Nepal, the earliest Devanagari examples from the 13th century were found on cliffs in the Sinja Valley. The script has also been used in important religious texts. For instance, a 14th-century copy of Patanjali's commentary survives as a significant historical record. These artifacts prove how the script helped preserve knowledge across generations.

Devanagari's influence reached far beyond the Indian subcontinent. In the 7th century, the Tibetan script was invented using Nāgarī from Kashmir.

This happened under the rule of Songtsen Gampo. Other related scripts, like Siddhaṃ, spread to East and Southeast Asia between the 7th and 10th centuries. These reached Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan. In Java, 8th-century inscriptions at the Prambanan temple show these connections. Even the Kawi script in Southeast Asia shares similarities with Devanagari. This demonstrates how a single writing system can shape the culture of an entire region.

Today, Devanagari remains a vital part of many different linguistic systems. It is used for many Central Indo-Aryan languages like Marathi, Konkani, and Nepali.

It also supports languages like Boro, Santali, and many others. While it looks different from scripts like Bengali-Assamese, they share similar structural roots. The script continues to be a primary tool for millions of people. It connects ancient traditions with modern communication. By providing a way to write complex sounds accurately, it remains a cornerstone of South Asian literacy.
