Speaking Lao involves some very interesting rules. It is a tonal language. This means the pitch of your voice changes the meaning of a word. It is also an analytic language. This means you build sentences by putting individual words together.

People write Lao using a special script. This script is an abugida, which is a type of writing system. It grew from very old Tai scripts.

Long ago, the ancestors of the Lao people began a big journey. They were speakers of Southwestern Tai dialects. They moved from southeastern China into Southeast Asia. This happened between the eighth and twelfth centuries.

Many of these people followed the path of big rivers. The ancestors of the Lao people specifically followed the Mekong River. As they moved, their way of speaking began to change. This led to the different languages we hear today.

History has also shaped the words people use. The powerful Khmer Empire had a big influence on the language. Many Lao words for tools or body parts come from Khmer.

Religion also brought new words to the people. Theravada Buddhism became very important in the mid-sixteenth century. This brought in words from Pali and Sanskrit. Some of these words are used for things like science or art. These words are like roots that help grow new ideas.

Lao is part of a large language family called Kra-Dai. It is very closely related to Thai and Isan. Because they are so similar, speakers can often understand each other. This is called mutual intelligibility. Even though they use different scripts, they can still communicate.
