Somali is a beautiful and important way for people to connect. It belongs to a large family of languages called Afroasiatic. Specifically, it is part of the Cushitic branch. This language is a huge part of life for many people. It is the most widely spoken Cushitic language in its region. About 24 million people speak Somali today. Most of these people live in the area known as Greater Somalia.

Learning how Somali works involves looking at its many sounds. The language has 22 different consonant sounds. It also uses five main vowel sounds. These vowels can be short or long. They can even change based on how the tongue moves in the mouth. This is called vowel harmony, where vowels in a word must match. There is even a debate about whether the language uses pitch or tone.

Writing Somali has a very interesting history. For a long time, people used many different scripts. Some used the Arabic script to write it. Others used special Somali scripts like Osmanya or Kaddare. In 1972, the government chose the Latin alphabet as the official way to write. This changed how books and newspapers were made. For example, a newspaper called Xiddigta Oktoobar began publishing in Somali.

There are three main groups of Somali speech. The first is Northern Somali, which is used for Standard Somali. This group includes dialects like Darod and the Isaaq dialect.

The second group is Benadir, spoken along the central coast near Mogadishu. The third group is Maay, spoken in the southern regions. Maay is different enough that it is sometimes compared to the difference between Spanish and Portuguese. Even so, all speakers feel they share one language.

Today, Somali is used in many places every day. It is an official language in Somalia and Ethiopia. It is also a major national language in Djibouti. You can hear it on the radio and see it on television. Many stations, like Radio Mogadishu, have broadcast in Somali for a long time. In 2013, governments created the Regional Somali Language Academy to protect it. This group works hard to keep the language safe for the future.
