It is also spoken in parts of Armenia and Azerbaijan. Kurdish is very important to the identity of the Kurdish people. It helps them share their stories and their history with one another. Speaking these languages brings people together across different lands.

There are several main varieties of Kurdish. These varieties are often called dialects. The largest group is Kurmanji, which has 15 to 20 million speakers. Many Kurmanji speakers live in Turkey and Syria. Another main variety is Sorani, spoken by 6 to 7 million people. Sorani is an official language in Iraq.

Writing Kurdish works in different ways depending on the dialect. Kurmanji is often written using the Hawar alphabet. This alphabet is based on the Latin script. Sorani is written using the Sorani alphabet. This script is based on the Arabic alphabet.
