The Iranian languages are a large family of ways to speak. They belong to the even bigger Indo-European language group. Many people speak these languages natively on the Iranian Plateau.

Today, there are about 86 different languages in this group. These languages are very important to the people who use them. They help people share their history and their daily lives. Persian is one of the largest, with 92 million speakers. Pashto has 55 million speakers, and Kurdish has 28 million.

Experts group these languages into three main stages of time. The first stage is Old Iranian, which lasted until 400 BCE. The second stage is Middle Iranian, from 400 BCE to 900 CE. The third stage is New Iranian, which began around 900 CE. To understand these, we look at how sounds change. For example, some sounds turn into different sounds over hundreds of years. This is how one ancestor language can turn into many. This process shows how much human speech can grow and shift.

All these languages come from one ancient ancestor called Proto-Iranian. This ancestor language likely started in Central Asia. Some people think it was used by the Andronovo culture. This culture lived around 2000 BCE. As different tribes moved to new lands, their speech changed. They moved into southeastern Europe and the Iranian Plateau. These migrations helped create the many different languages we see today. The way they moved shaped how people talk now.

We have records of some very old languages. Old Persian was spoken by people in the southwest. They lived in a place called Parsa. We can see their writing in the Behistun inscription. Another important language is Avestan. This was a sacred language used for religious texts. These texts are called the Avesta. They belong to the religion known as Zoroastrianism. Avestan is split into Old Avestan and Younger Avestan. These two versions were used in different places and times.

Many Middle Iranian languages were also recorded by historians. Middle Persian came from the Sasanian Empire. Parthian was the language of the Parthian Empire. There was also Bactrian, used by the Kushan and Hephthalite empires. The word "Iran" itself comes from Middle Persian. It was first found in an inscription at Naqsh-e Rostam. Some scholars use the word "Iranic" to describe the whole family. They do this to be very clear about the language group. It is a way to honor the long history of these speakers.
