Avestan is a very old and special language. It is the sacred language used for religious prayers in Zoroastrianism.

People call it a liturgical language. This means it is used for formal religious ceremonies. Even though people do not speak it in daily life, it remains very important for traditions. The name Avestan actually comes from the name of its holy books, the Avesta. This name might mean a "praise song." Because the language is tied to these texts, it carries deep meaning for those who use it.

For a long time, this language lived only in the minds of people. There were no books to read. Instead, people used an oral tradition. They memorized the holy words and passed them down by heart. This helped keep the language alive for many centuries. Later, during the Sasanian period, people finally put the words into writing. They created a special alphabet to make sure the sounds were recorded very carefully.

This writing was known as "religion writing."

Scholars divide the language into two main groups. The first group is called Old Avestan. Some people also call this Gathic Avestan. It is very old and has a complex structure. The second group is called Young Avestan. There is a big gap in time between these two versions. Old Avestan is much more ancient than Young Avestan. Some researchers think there might even be a middle stage called Middle Avestan.

We do not know exactly where the original speakers lived. Old Avestan does not name specific places. However, Young Avestan texts mention many locations. These names point to the eastern parts of Greater Iran. This area includes modern Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It also covers parts of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Some experts think the Yaz culture might have been connected to these people. This is because of their farming ways and other traditions.

The Avestan alphabet is quite large and detailed. It has 53 different characters. People write using this alphabet from right to left. Many of these signs were made by adding loops to older scripts. Some parts of the alphabet even used letters from the Greek system. This helped the writers record the exact sounds of the prayers. Even though the language is no longer spoken, this beautiful script keeps the history alive.
