He is the spiritual founder of Zoroastrianism. Many people also call him Zarathustra. He was a preacher and a poet-prophet. He is credited with writing the Gathas. These are a series of sacred hymns. They are written in a language called Old Avestan. These songs explain the most important beliefs of his faith.

Zoroaster taught about a struggle between two sides. He spoke of a wise god named Ahura Mazda. This god represents the side of truth, known as asha. The other side is deception, which is called druj. Zoroaster taught that people have free will. This means people must choose their own actions. He said people should follow the path of truth. They do this through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds.

It is hard to know exactly when Zoroaster lived. There is no single date that all experts agree on. Some scholars think he lived around the 7th or 6th centuries BC. Other researchers use language clues to suggest an earlier time. They believe he may have lived in the 2nd millennium BC. This would mean he lived roughly 3,500 years ago. Some ancient Greek writers even thought he lived much longer ago.

We also do not know exactly where he was born. His homeland was likely in the eastern part of Greater Iran. This area might be in modern-day Afghanistan. His name has many possible meanings. One common idea is that it means "he who manages camels."

Some people think his name could also mean he drives camels. The name "Zoroaster" actually comes from a later Greek way of writing his name.

Zoroaster's ideas have stayed important for a very long time. Zoroastrianism became a major religion in Greater Iran. It was the official religion during the Sassanid Empire. The religion began to decline after the 7th century AD. Some thinkers believe his ideas influenced other famous people. These include philosophers like Plato and Pythagoras. His ideas about morality might also link to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
