In the Zoroastrian faith, Ahriman is known as the spirit of evil. His original Avestan name is Angra Mainyu. He is the main adversary to the holy spirits. He also stands against Ahura Mazda, the highest deity.

Many people see him as a force of destruction. He represents chaos, disorder, and things that inhibit good. He is the absolute opposite of the bounteous spirit. This spirit works to cause harm in the world.

How Ahriman acts is described in many ancient texts. He is said to create things like sickness and winter. He also makes dangerous storms and various plagues.

Some stories say he creates monsters to fight the good side. In one account, he even creates a primal seductress. He tries to make people choose the worst kind of thinking. However, many followers believe he cannot truly win. The good side will eventually prevail over him.

History shows that ideas about Ahriman changed over time. The oldest texts are called the Gathas. In these hymns, Angra Mainyu is not yet a proper name.

As time passed, he became a well-known figure. By the 4th century BC, his role was clearly defined. Later, in the 9th to 12th centuries, books like the Bundahishn added more details. These texts explain his battle against the light. This history helps us see how beliefs can grow.

There are many specific facts about his origins. One group called the Zurvanites had a unique story. They believed Ahura Mazda and Ahriman were twin brothers.

They said both were born from a god named Zurvan. Ahriman was born from a moment of doubt. He emerged first by ripping open the womb. In other texts, he is linked to the daevas. These are described as false gods or deceivers. Some even place his home in a dark nether world.

These stories connect to how people view good and evil. The battle between these forces is a central theme. It explains why hard things happen in life.

Many believers feel they can help the good side. They do this through good thoughts, words, and deeds. This makes the struggle a personal one for everyone. It shows how ancient ideas still shape how people live. Even the way his name is written can show respect or disgust.
