Persian mythology is a collection of ancient stories from Iranian peoples.

These myths explain how the world began and how it works. They also describe the lives of gods, heroes, and many strange creatures. Scholars study these tales to understand old religious and political systems. This includes the history of the Iranian Plateau and surrounding regions. These stories helped shape the culture of many different lands in West and Central Asia.

At the heart of these myths is a great struggle between good and evil. This conflict is seen in almost every story. Ahura Mazda is the creator and a symbol of goodness. He represents light, life, and truth. On the other side is Ahriman, an evil force. Ahriman brings darkness, sorrow, and disease to the world.

Some stories say Ahriman is a demon with many heads and eyes. The myths teach that good will eventually win this battle. In the end, only light and health will remain.

Many different groups helped shape these traditions over time. Before the Medes and Persians, tribes like the Lullubi and Kassites lived there. The Elamites also had a famous civilization in the southwest. These early peoples had their own special myths and beliefs. Some of these ideas mixed with the newer Persian traditions. This created a large and complex body of folklore.

Even the ancient Indian myths share similar roots with these Iranian stories.

Special animals and symbols appear throughout the tales. Birds are often seen as good signs. The Simurgh is a famous, large, and beautiful bird.

Other characters, like the beautiful Peri, changed over time in the stories. Some myths even describe a king named Zahhak who had snakes growing from his shoulders. These details make the mythology very vivid and memorable.

We know about these stories through several important written works. The Avesta contains some of the oldest religious hymns. Later, writers created more detailed books like the Bundahisn and the Vendidad.

A very famous source is the Shahnameh, or "The Book of Kings." This epic poem was written by the poet Abolqasem Ferdowsi. It helps us see how these ancient ideas lived on through history. These texts connect the ancient past to the world we know today.
