Rakshasas are a race of beings found in many ancient traditions. They are most famous in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Some folk stories in Indonesia also include them. These beings are often described as having supernatural powers. They can use magic to change their size or shape. This special power is called maya.

Some stories say they live on Earth. They are often seen as enemies to good beings. However, they are not always bad. Some rakshasas are actually kind or moral.

Many stories describe what these beings look like. They are often shown as huge and fierce. Some have two fangs in their mouths. They might have sharp, claw-like fingernails. Some are even described with flaming red hair and eyes.

Because of their magic, they can vanish or fly. They can also look like any other creature. This makes them very tricky to spot. Some people believe they can smell humans from far away.

In the great Hindu epics, rakshasas play huge roles. The Ramayana tells of a king named Ravana. He rules from an island fortress called Lanka. Ravana is a famous villain who uses magic to trick people.

The Mahabharata also features many rakshasas. Some fight as warriors for good sides. Others fight for evil sides. For example, a rakshasa named Ghatotkacha fought with the heroes. He was the son of a human named Bhima and a rakshasi named Hidimbi.

Different religions have different views on these beings. In Buddhism, some rakshasas are protectors. A group of rakshasa daughters helps protect a sacred text. In Jainism, the stories are quite different. Jain accounts say rakshasas were a civilized people. They were even followers of a teacher called a Tirthankara. They were known for being vegetarian.

In Indonesia, some believe a spirit can change a person into a rakshasa.

Today, you might see rakshasas in modern things. They appear in the game Dungeons & Dragons. In that game, they often have tiger or monkey heads. They are also seen in movies and comics. Some people use the word "raksasa" to mean a giant or a monster. In Indonesia and Malaysia, the word can mean something huge. It is amazing how one idea can travel through so many cultures.
