These teeth are very useful for many living things. In mammals, a fang is a modified maxillary tooth. This means it is a tooth from the upper jaw. Animals use them for biting and tearing flesh. Most meat eaters have these teeth. Some animals that eat plants also have them. Fruit bats are one example of this.

Fangs work in different ways for different animals. In mammals, they help with hunting and eating. Large cats use them to hold or kill prey. Bears are omnivores that eat many things. They use fangs when they hunt for fish. However, they do not need them to eat fruit. Snakes use a very different kind of fang. These are specialized teeth linked to a venom gland.

Spiders also have fangs on the outside of their bodies.

Humans have teeth called canines too. Our canines are relatively short. Because they are short, we do not call them fangs. Some apes have teeth that look more like fangs. They use these teeth for fighting or making threats. Many creatures in stories also have them. Dragons and gargoyles are common examples.

Demons and yakshas are also depicted with big fangs.

Fangs appear in many types of art and religion. In some Hindu art, gods have fangs. The goddess Chamunda is a fierce warrior. The god Yama is a god of death. Their fangs symbolize the ability to hunt and kill.
