These nine forms tell a story of change. According to Hindu mythology, they represent nine stages of Durga. These stages happen during a nine-day war. The war was fought against a demon-king named Mahishasura. After the nine days of war, the tenth day arrives. This tenth day is called Vijayadashami. It is one of the most important festivals for Hindus.

There are many ways to honor these goddesses. During Navaratri, people worship nine unmarried girls. These girls are up to nine years old. People believe these girls are the incarnations of the goddesses. They also perform a ritual called nabapatrika. This ritual uses the leaves of eight plants. These are tied to a banana plant. The name means "nine leaves" in Sanskrit.
