Morya is known as the most important spiritual leader for this sect. Many stories tell of his deep devotion to Ganesha. Some people say he was born in Bidar, Karnataka. Others believe he was born to a family in Pune, Maharashtra. One story says his parents prayed to Ganesha to have a child. This shows how much people connected their lives to the god.

Morya spent much of his time worshipping at a temple in Morgaon. However, legends say he had a hard time being allowed to worship there. One story says he could not find space during a big festival. In another version, he was accused of magic after a miracle happened. Because of these troubles, Morya moved to a place called Chinchwad. He found a stone image of Ganesha in a river there.

He built a new temple in Chinchwad to worship the god in peace.

Historians have different ideas about when Morya actually lived. Some scholars place him in the 13th or 14th century. Others believe he lived during the 16th century. A different group of experts dates him to between 1610 and 1659. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation suggests he lived from around 1330 to 1556. One record says he married in 1470 and had a son in 1481. These different dates show how much time has passed since his life.

Morya's family became very important to the Ganapatya tradition. He had a son named Chintamani, who people believed was a living part of Ganesha. This started a line of leaders known as the Devs. This family of Devs lasted for seven generations.

One Dev, named Narayan, even received gifts from the ruler Aurangzeb. These gifts included land in the form of eight villages. The family was very respected by many different people and rulers.

Today, many people still visit the places where Morya lived and worked. His memorial temple is a low building in Chinchwad. It has a square hall and an inner shrine.
