Namdev was a famous saint from India.

He belonged to the Varkari tradition of Hinduism. This group follows the deity Vithoba of Pandharpur. Namdev is known for his special devotional songs. These songs are called bhajans or kirtans. He used music to share his deep faith. His ideas helped spread a way of worship that focuses on one god. Many people still follow his path today. They go on big walks called pilgrimages to visit Pandharpur.

Namdev's songs were not just poems. They were made to be sung with music.

He used a special style called samkirtana. This made his songs easy for common people to hear. He used a rhythm called Caturasra to keep the beat. His songs often had a repeated part called a Tek. This helped the singer stay in time with the music. He also used a name stamp called a Bhanita. This told everyone who wrote the song. These songs were passed down by singing families for a long time.

It is hard to know exactly when Namdev lived.

Some scholars say he lived between 1270 and 1350. Other experts suggest different years like 1207 to 1287. Some even think he lived around 1425. Many stories about his life were written much later. These stories include many miracles. One famous story says he fed milk to a statue of Vithoba as a child. Other stories say his parents found him floating in a river. Because these stories were written centuries later, scholars find them hard to agree on.

Namdev's life and work touched many different groups. He was born into a Shudra caste. This means he was a tailor or a calico-printer. He taught that everyone is equal before God. This was a very important idea for people in lower castes. His message reached far beyond his home in Maharashtra. He is even recognized in North Indian traditions. The Sikh religion holds him in high respect as a holy man. Because of this, some of his hymns are in the Guru Granth Sahib.

Today, we can still find the traces of Namdev's work. There are many old books filled with his poems. These are called abhangs. Out of thousands of poems, scholars think about 600 to 700 are real. In 1970, the government of Maharashtra put many of them together. This collection is called the Sri Namdev Gatha. People still visit holy places to honor him. There are shrines in places like Ghuman and Pandharpur. His life shows how music and faith can bring many different people together.
