His life followed a path of learning and devotion. Tulsidas spent many years studying in the sacred city of Varanasi. He studied Sanskrit grammar and several important Hindu subjects. He learned from a teacher named Shesha Sanatana at the Pancaganga Ghat. This study lasted for about fifteen or sixteen years. Later, he became a famous figure in cities like Banaras and Ayodhya. He even started the Ramlila plays. These are folk plays that tell the story of the Ramayana. People still perform these plays in the same way today.

Stories about his birth are very special. Most scholars say he was born in Soron around August 11, 1511. Some people believe he was born in Rajapur. His parents were named Hulsi and Atmaram. Legend says he was a very unusual baby. It is said he had all thirty-two teeth at birth. Some stories say he did not cry but said the name "Ram" instead. Because of this, he was called Rambola. This name means "he who uttered Rama."

His early years were quite difficult. Some accounts say his family left him shortly after he was born. A helper named Chuniya took him to her village. She looked after him for five and a half years. After she died, he had to live on his own. He wandered and worked small jobs to survive. Eventually, he met a guru and received a new name. This name was Tulsidas. Many believe he was a reincarnation of the poet Valmiki. This belief comes from the Ramanandi sect and ancient scriptures.

Today, the work of Tulsidas is everywhere in India. His words are used in many types of music. They are even part of everyday speech as proverbs. In 1984, his songs were very popular on cassette tapes in Banaras. In 1987, a TV show based on his work became a huge success. It was the first time a religious epic was shown on Indian television. The show drew about one hundred million viewers. People even stopped their daily activities to watch it. This shows how much his writing still matters to people today.
