He lived during the 17th century in the state of Maharashtra. He was a devoted follower of the god Vithoba. Vithoba is a form of the god Vishnu. Tukaram is best known for his beautiful devotional poetry. These poems are called abhanga. They are written in the Marathi language. People in Maharashtra still find these poems very special today.

Tukaram's life was centered on worship and community. He spent his later years in deep prayer. He also led kirtans for the people. Kirtan is a way of praying through group singing and dancing. He believed kirtan was more than just a way to learn. To him, the act of singing together was devotion itself. He felt that singing helped create a spiritual path for others too.

His ideas often focused on making society fairer. This is called social reform. Tukaram taught that the pride of caste does not make a person holy. He believed that for the service of God, caste does not matter. He even accepted women as his followers. One famous follower was a woman named Bahina Bai.

Because of these ideas, some people in his time were unkind to him. One man named Mambaji Gosavi even opposed him.

Historians believe Tukaram died in the year 1650. Some legends say he met Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. Some stories even claim Tukaram helped save Shivaji's life. His poetry is gathered in a large collection called the Abhanga Gatha. This collection likely contains about 4,500 poems. These poems cover many human feelings and life experiences. They were likely composed between the years 1632 and 1650.
