He was born Alexei Maximovich Peshkov in Nizhny Novgorod. Gorky believed that writing was a moral and political act. He used his stories to show the lives of people in hard times. He wrote about those living on the edges of society. He wanted to show their struggles and their hardships. Yet, he also wanted to show their inner spark of humanity.

His life was full of many different experiences. Gorky became an orphan when he was only eleven years old. He left home at age twelve and traveled on foot. He spent five years walking across the Russian Empire. During this time, he worked many different jobs. He was even a shoemaker's apprentice. These many jobs helped him gather ideas for his books. In 1895, he chose the name Maxim Gorky. The name Gorky means "bitter" in Russian. He chose it to show his anger about life in Russia.

As he grew, Gorky became a very important literary figure. He met and knew famous writers like Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov.

Gorky was also very active in the Marxist socialist movement. He supported the Bolsheviks and worked with Vladimir Lenin. He often spoke out against the Tsar's government. This led to him being arrested many times. He was even held in the Peter and Paul Fortress. A large group of people helped him get released from prison.

He wrote many books that people still talk about today. His early short stories like "Makar Chudra" were very successful.

He also wrote a famous play called "The Lower Depths." One of his most well-known novels is called "Mother." Gorky actually thought "Mother" was one of his biggest failures. Some critics think his novel "The Life of Klim Samgin" is his masterpiece. He was even called the "founder of Socialist Realism." This was a specific style of art and writing in the Soviet Union.

Later in life, Gorky had a complicated relationship with the government. He lived in many places, including the island of Capri in Italy.

In 1928, he was invited back to the Soviet Union by Joseph Stalin. He lived there from 1932 until he died in June 1936. Even though he supported the regime publicly, things were often difficult. He tried to defend other writers who got in trouble. This led to him spending his last days under house arrest. His political life changed how people remember his great writing today.
