He was born Ovsei-Gershon Aronovich Radomyslsky in Yelizavetgrad. His parents were Jewish dairy farmers named Aron and Reizy. Zinoviev grew up studying history, literature, and philosophy. He joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1901. Later, he became a very important member of the Bolshevik group. This group wanted to change how Russia was ruled. He became a close associate of the leader Vladimir Lenin.

Zinoviev worked in many different ways to build his political power. He first helped Lenin with party organization and propaganda in Europe. After the February Revolution in 1917, he returned to Russia. He helped lead the city of Petrograd during a very difficult time.

He also served as the chairman of the Comintern. The Comintern was an organization that helped other countries join the movement. He used this role to spread Soviet ideas across the world. He even gave a famous four-hour speech in German in 1920.

His relationship with other leaders changed many times over the years. In 1917, he and Lev Kamenev disagreed with Lenin about using force.

This caused a big argument within the party. However, Zinoviev later became a full member of the Politburo in 1921. After Lenin died in 1924, Zinoviev joined Joseph Stalin and Kamenev. They formed a group of three leaders called a troika. This group worked together to limit the power of Leon Trotsky. They managed many party meetings to keep their influence high.

Political life in the Soviet Union was often very unstable. The alliance between Zinoviev and Stalin did not last long. In 1926, Zinoviev joined Trotsky to form the United Opposition.

This move caused him to lose his important jobs. He was expelled from the party in 1927. He and Kamenev rejoined the party in 1928. They were expelled again in 1932 because of the Ryutin affair. Zinoviev spent many years moving in and out of the party's good graces.

In his final years, Zinoviev faced very serious trouble with the law. In 1934, he was accused of being involved in a crime against Sergei Kirov. This led to a ten-year prison sentence. While he was in prison, the government accused him of more crimes. These accusations happened during a time called the Great Purge. He was eventually executed after a show trial in August 1936.
