He was born on February 25, 1881, in Saratov, Russia. His parents were Russian peasants from a village called Kukarka. His father, Ivan, was a farmer who died in 1889. After this, Rykov's older sister, Klavdiya, helped take care of him. As a young student, Rykov was very smart. He excelled in math, physics, and the natural sciences.

He eventually went to the University of Kazan to study law.

Rykov spent many years working for political change. He joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1898. In 1903, the party split into two groups. Rykov chose to join the Bolshevik group led by Vladimir Lenin. He worked as an agent in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. He even spent time in exile in France and Siberia.

During the Russian Revolution of 1917, he held many important roles. He served on the Council of People's Commissars, which was the new government. He also helped manage food supplies for the Red Army and Navy during the Civil War.

After the Civil War ended, Rykov became a very high-ranking official. When Vladimir Lenin died in January 1924, Rykov took on huge responsibilities.

He became the premier of both Russia and the Soviet Union. He was known as a moderate leader. This means he often disagreed with the more radical members of his party. He worked with other leaders like Nikolai Bukharin to support certain economic policies. Under his leadership, vodka was taxed heavily, a rule sometimes called "Rykovka."

Over time, the power in the Soviet Union began to change. A man named Joseph Stalin grew more powerful as the General Secretary.

Stalin's group began to take control away from the official government. Rykov and his moderate allies were called the "Rightists." By 1929, they lost their political influence. Rykov was removed from his top position in December 1930. He was then moved to a smaller job as the People's Commissar of Communications.

He stayed in this role for several years.

Eventually, the political situation became very dangerous for Rykov. In February 1937, the government arrested him and his friend Nikolai Bukharin. This happened during a period known as the Great Purge.

Rykov was part of a famous event called the Trial of the Twenty-One. In March 1938, the court found him guilty of treason. He was executed that same month. His life shows how much the leadership of Russia changed during that era.
