He was born as Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Skryabin in a small village. His father was a merchant. As a teenager, he was known for being quiet and shy. He joined a political group called the Bolsheviks in 1906. He chose the name Molotov because it means sledgehammer in Russian. He thought this name sounded strong and industrial.

Molotov worked hard to rise through the ranks of the party. He was arrested and sent away to live in exile twice. During these times, he worked as a professional revolutionary. He even helped write for an underground newspaper called Pravda. It was during this work that he met Joseph Stalin. They became very close allies for many years. This partnership helped Molotov gain a lot of power.

By 1930, Molotov became the head of the Soviet government. He helped lead plans to build many new factories. He also helped oversee a change in how farms worked. This process was called agricultural collectivization. It replaced small private farms with large state farms. These changes were very difficult for the people living there. Millions of people were moved to work in special settlements. A great famine occurred during this time, and many people died.

However, he disagreed with a new leader named Nikita Khrushchev. In 1957, Molotov tried to take power back in a failed coup. Because of this, he lost his jobs and was sent to Mongolia. He lived a long life and died in 1986.
