His father was a merchant, and as a teenager, Molotov was described as shy and quiet. In 1906, he joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. He gravitated toward the radical Bolshevik faction led by Vladimir Lenin. He adopted the pseudonym "Molotov," which comes from the Russian word "molot," meaning sledgehammer. He chose this name because it had an industrial and proletarian ring to it. During his early years, he was arrested and exiled twice before the October Revolution of 1917.

Molotov worked as a professional revolutionary for many years. He wrote for the party press and helped organize the underground party. While working on the newspaper Pravda, he met Joseph Stalin for the first time. This meeting began a long political association. After the 1917 revolution, Molotov became a member of the Military Revolutionary Committee. This group planned the October Revolution, which brought the Bolsheviks to power. In 1921, Lenin appointed him to lead the party secretariat. By 1922, Stalin became General Secretary, and Molotov served as his de facto Second Secretary.

As Stalin's power grew, Molotov became a full member of the Politburo in 1926. The Politburo was the group of high-ranking leaders who made major decisions. Molotov was a loyal supporter of Stalin during power struggles against rivals like Leon Trotsky. He was known for his sharp mind and great administrative talent. While some called him a dull bureaucrat, he was actually a very influential leader. In 1930, he became the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars. In this role, he oversaw the First Five-Year Plan, which focused on rapid industrialization.

Molotov played a central role in agricultural collectivization. This was a policy that replaced small, private farms with large, state-run collective farms. Molotov insisted this change happen quickly. He viewed land-owning peasants, known as kulaks, as enemies of the state. In 1931 alone, almost two million kulaks were forcibly moved to special settlements for labor. This disruption of farming, combined with the push to export grain, caused a massive famine. An estimated 11 million people died during this period. Despite warnings of grain shortages, Molotov continued to demand high collection targets for export.

In 1939, Molotov took on the role of Foreign Minister. He signed the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact with Nazi Germany.

He helped manage the complex diplomacy required to maintain the wartime alliance.

After the war ended in 1945, Molotov began to lose favor with Stalin. He lost his position as foreign minister in 1948 and was criticized at a party congress in 1952. After Stalin died in 1953, Molotov was reappointed as foreign minister. However, he strongly opposed the de-Stalinization policies of the new leader, Nikita Khrushchev. In 1957, Molotov joined a failed attempt to remove Khrushchev from power. Following this coup, he was dismissed from all his offices. He was sent to Mongolia as an ambassador and was eventually expelled from the party in 1961. He spent his remaining years defending the legacy of Stalin until he died in 1986.
