Georgi Dimitrov Mihaylov was a prominent Bulgarian communist politician and revolutionary. 
Dimitrov was born on June 18, 1882, in Kovachevtsi, Bulgaria. He was the first of eight children born to refugee parents from Ottoman Macedonia. His father was a rural craftsman who became a factory worker due to industrialization. 
His political career began in earnest when he joined the Bulgarian Social Democratic Workers' Party in 1902. He later helped found the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1919. During World War I, he was elected to the Bulgarian parliament. He used his platform to oppose the war and Bulgarian nationalism. These actions led to several short prison sentences for sedition and incitement to mutiny. In 1923, he led a failed communist uprising against the government of Aleksandar Tsankov. This conflict resulted in the deaths of approximately five thousand communist supporters. Following this failure, Dimitrov lived in exile for many years.
Dimitrov gained international fame during a major legal battle in Germany. In February 1933, an arson attack damaged the Reichstag, which is the German parliament building. The Nazi government accused Dimitrov and two other Bulgarians of being part of a communist conspiracy to start the fire. 
Following his acquittal, Dimitrov moved to Moscow and rose to high levels of power. He became part of the inner circle of the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin. 
In 1946, after 22 years of living in exile, Dimitrov returned to Bulgaria. He was elected prime minister of the newly established People's Republic of Bulgaria. During his leadership, he attempted to build a federation of Southern Slavs. He negotiated the 1947 Bled accord with the Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito. However, this plan failed because of disagreements over the Macedonian question and political fallout between Stalin and Tito. The idea of a joint country was eventually abandoned.
Dimitrov died in 1949 in Barvikha, near Moscow, following a short illness.
