Georgi Dimitrov Mihaylov was a prominent Bulgarian communist politician and revolutionary.

He served as the General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party from 1933 to 1949. He was also the first leader of the Communist People's Republic of Bulgaria from 1946 to 1949. Between 1935 and 1943, he held the position of General Secretary of the Communist International, known as the Comintern. His life was defined by his leadership in international communist movements and his struggle against fascism.

Dimitrov was born on June 18, 1882, in Kovachevtsi, Bulgaria. He was the first of eight children born to refugee parents from Ottoman Macedonia. His father was a rural craftsman who became a factory worker due to industrialization.

During his youth, Dimitrov trained as a compositor and worked as a printer. He became deeply involved in the labor movement in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. By the age of 18, he was already serving as the secretary for the Sofia branch of the printers' union.

His political career began in earnest when he joined the Bulgarian Social Democratic Workers' Party in 1902. He later helped found the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1919. During World War I, he was elected to the Bulgarian parliament. He used his platform to oppose the war and Bulgarian nationalism. These actions led to several short prison sentences for sedition and incitement to mutiny. In 1923, he led a failed communist uprising against the government of Aleksandar Tsankov. This conflict resulted in the deaths of approximately five thousand communist supporters. Following this failure, Dimitrov lived in exile for many years.

Dimitrov gained international fame during a major legal battle in Germany. In February 1933, an arson attack damaged the Reichstag, which is the German parliament building. The Nazi government accused Dimitrov and two other Bulgarians of being part of a communist conspiracy to start the fire.

He was arrested and held in Nazi detention until early 1934. During the Reichstag fire trial in Leipzig, Dimitrov chose to defend himself without a lawyer. He used the trial to defend his political honor and communist ideology. He faced high-ranking Nazi officials, including Hermann Göring. The court eventually acquitted him due to insufficient evidence of a conspiracy.

Following his acquittal, Dimitrov moved to Moscow and rose to high levels of power. He became part of the inner circle of the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin.

In 1934, he was appointed to lead the Comintern. At the 7th World Congress of the Comintern in 1935, he was elected General Secretary. He promoted a "united front" tactic to encourage different groups to work together against fascism. This strategy was intended to replace the previous practice of labeling all non-communist leftists as "social fascists."

In 1946, after 22 years of living in exile, Dimitrov returned to Bulgaria. He was elected prime minister of the newly established People's Republic of Bulgaria. During his leadership, he attempted to build a federation of Southern Slavs. He negotiated the 1947 Bled accord with the Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito. However, this plan failed because of disagreements over the Macedonian question and political fallout between Stalin and Tito. The idea of a joint country was eventually abandoned.

Dimitrov died in 1949 in Barvikha, near Moscow, following a short illness.
