He played a vital role in the early years of the Soviet government. Born Ovsei-Gershon Aronovich Radomyslsky, he grew up in Yelizavetgrad in the Russian Empire. His parents were Jewish dairy farmers who educated him at home. Zinoviev studied philosophy, literature, and history before entering politics. He joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in 1901. By 1903, he had joined the Bolshevik faction. This group became a major force in changing Russian society.

Zinoviev worked closely with Vladimir Lenin for many years. He served as Lenin's aide-de-camp and representative in various organizations. During the years leading up to 1917, he moved across Europe. He focused on party organization and the spread of propaganda.

After the February Revolution in 1917, he returned to Russia. However, he and Lev Kamenev disagreed with Lenin about the October Revolution. They opposed the use of armed force to seize power. This disagreement led to a temporary split between them and Lenin.

Despite this conflict, Zinoviev returned to high positions in the party. He was elected to the Central Committee in 1918. He also took charge of the regional government in Petrograd.

One of his most important roles was chairman of the Comintern. The Comintern, or Communist International, was founded in March 1919. Its goal was to support revolutions in other countries. Zinoviev used this platform to spread Soviet political rhetoric globally. He even gave a famous four-hour speech in German in 1920.

After Lenin's death in 1924, a struggle for power began. Zinoviev, Kamenev, and Joseph Stalin formed a leadership group called a troika. This group worked to marginalize Leon Trotsky. They managed the selection of delegates for party conferences. This allowed them to secure a majority of seats in 1924. Zinoviev's influence seemed to be at its highest point during this time. However, his power was mostly limited to the Petrograd party organization. He did not control the entire Soviet political apparatus.

Political alliances in the Soviet Union were often unstable and changed quickly. The troika eventually fell apart as tensions grew between Zinoviev and Stalin. In 1926, Zinoviev joined Trotsky to form the United Opposition. This move resulted in his removal from the Politburo and the Comintern. He was expelled from the party in 1927. He and Kamenev rejoined the party in 1928. They were expelled again in 1932 following the Ryutin affair. Zinoviev spent much of the next few years moving in and out of political favor.

Zinoviev's final years were marked by serious legal accusations. In 1934, he was accused of being involved in the assassination of Sergei Kirov. This led to a sentence of ten years in prison. While imprisoned, he faced further accusations of treason. These events took place during a period known as the Great Purge. This was a time of intense political repression and many accusations.

Zinoviev was eventually executed after a show trial in August 1936.

Zinoviev's life reflects the complex nature of early Soviet politics. He moved from being a close aide to Lenin to a powerful leader. He then became an opponent of the rising leadership under Stalin. His career shows how quickly political status could shift. He held major roles in the Comintern and the Politburo.

His story is tied to the rise of the Soviet state and its internal conflicts.
