He was a Russian revolutionary, politician, and political theorist. Lenin founded the Bolsheviks, a powerful political faction. He led the October Revolution in 1917. This event established the world's first communist state. He served as the head of government for Soviet Russia starting in 1917. Later, he became the leader of the Soviet Union in 1922. He was born in 1870 in Simbirsk. His father, Ilya Ulyanov, was a dedicated educator. Ilya rose from a lower-class background to become a school director. This work earned him the status of a nobleman. Lenin was a highly competitive student. He excelled at his studies and enjoyed playing chess. However, his family faced great tragedy in 1887. His brother, Aleksandr, was executed for plotting against Tsar Alexander III.

This event deeply influenced Lenin's turn toward radical politics.

Lenin became a dedicated follower of Marxism. Marxism is a political theory based on the writings of Karl Marx. It focuses on the struggles between different social classes. Lenin studied these ideas while living in Samara and Saint Petersburg. He disagreed with the Narodnik movement. The Narodniks believed peasants could build socialism through small communes. Lenin argued that the urban working class, or proletariat, must lead the revolution. He believed Russia was moving from feudalism toward capitalism. This distinction became a core part of his political identity.

His revolutionary activities often put him at odds with the law.

In 1897, the government exiled him to Siberia for three years. After his exile, he moved to Western Europe. He lived in places like Switzerland to organize political groups. In 1903, the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party split into two groups. One group was the Mensheviks. The other was Lenin's faction, the Bolsheviks. Lenin advocated for a "vanguard party." This meant a small, disciplined group of professional revolutionaries would lead the workers.

In 1917, Lenin returned to Russia during a time of great change.

The Bolsheviks fought against various anti-Bolshevik and separatist armies. During this period, the government centralized power within the Communist Party. They used the "Red Terror" to suppress political opposition. This period involved the imprisonment and death of tens of thousands of people. To stabilize the economy after a famine, Lenin introduced the New Economic Policy in 1921. This policy reversed some earlier strict rules. By 1922, the Soviet Union was officially formed, uniting several non-Russian nations.

Lenin's health declined toward the end of his life.
