Demyan Bedny was a well-known Soviet Russian poet and satirist.

A satirist is someone who uses humor to criticize people or ideas. He used his writing to share political messages, which is often called agitprop. This type of work was meant to spread specific beliefs to many people. Bedny became very famous for this style of poetry. His work helped him become a major figure in Soviet culture. He even had his own rooms in the Kremlin, a famous place for leaders.

Bedny's life began in a very poor way. He was born in the village of Hubivka.

Later, he lived in Yelysavethrad and then returned to his home village. He grew up in extreme poverty with his mother. At age 14, he went to a college in Kiev to train as a feldsher, which is a medical worker. He also spent four years in the military. Later, he studied history and language at Petersburg University. These many steps helped shape the man he became.

His career as a writer started around 1911. He began publishing in newspapers like Pravda. That same year, he wrote a poem called "Of Demyan Bedny." This poem gave him the pen name he used for the rest of his life. He also became friends with the leader Vladimir Lenin. In 1913, he published his first collection of poems called Basni, or Fables. During World War I, he served again as a medical worker. He even wrote poems from the frontlines during the Russian Civil War.

Bedny received many honors for his work and service. He earned the Order of the Red Banner in 1923. Later, he received the Order of Lenin in 1933.

He was so popular that a town named Spassk was renamed Bednodemyanovsk to honor him. He also built a massive private library. It had over 30,000 books in it. This was one of the largest collections in the Soviet Union.

However, his relationship with leaders like Stalin was often difficult. Stalin sometimes disliked his plays or poems. In 1932, Bedny was even moved from his Kremlin home to a different apartment. He lost his membership in the Communist Party in 1938. Despite these hard times, he regained favor during World War II. He wrote a poem about a great victory in May 1945. He died just two weeks later on May 19. He is buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
