He lived during the early Soviet era. Much of his work felt strange or silly to people. This style is often called absurdism. He believed art should follow its own rules. It did not always have to follow the logic of the real world. His writing often felt like a dream. This helped him create a very special kind of art.

Kharms had a very interesting way of writing his stories. Many of his pieces were very short vignettes. A vignette is a small, brief scene. These scenes might only be a few paragraphs long.

In these stories, he mixed real life with fantasy. He might write about poverty or hard times. Then, he would add something dreamlike or funny. He even included famous authors like Pushkin or Leo Tolstoy in his tales. They might do silly things, like tripping over each other.

His life as a writer began in Saint Petersburg.

He was born Daniil Yuvachev. He later chose the name Kharms as a pseudonym, or a pen name. He might have picked it from the English words "harm" and "charm." He was also a member of a group called Oberiu. This was a collective of artists known as the Union of Real Art. He worked closely with other artists like Alexander Vvedensky. They wanted to create a new kind of art movement.

Kharms faced many hard times because of his ideas. The government in the Soviet Union did not like his style. They thought his children's writing did not teach the right values.

Even though his life was difficult, his work survived. His friend Yakov Druskin saved a suitcase of his papers during the war. These papers were hidden so they would not be lost.

Today, many people around the world read his work.
