He grew up in St. Petersburg after being born into a noble family in Yaroslavl. Kuzmin studied music at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He studied under the famous teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. He chose not to graduate from the music school. Kuzmin said that writing poetry was much simpler. He felt that poetry fell from the sky like manna. This helped him focus on his many different types of art.

Kuzmin was a very busy creator. He did not stop making music even after he turned to poetry. In 1906, he composed music for a play called Balaganchik. This play was written by Alexander Blok. Kuzmin also played the piano and sang his own songs. People in high society loved to hear him in salons. He performed at places like Ivanov's Tower and The Stray Dog. He once joked that his music was small but had "poison." He used his musical skills to help make his writing feel alive.

His life was shaped by many people and places. He traveled to Egypt and Italy to see the world. He also visited northern Russia to meet the Old Believers. His friend Georgy Chicherin was a big influence on him. Kuzmin lived in a famous apartment called the Tower. This was the home of Vyacheslav Ivanov. He was also friends with the poet Anna Akhmatova. In 1913, he met a poet named Yuri Yurkun. They lived together and stayed partners until Kuzmin died. These connections helped him grow as an artist.

Kuzmin changed how people wrote in Russia. In 1910, he helped start a movement called Acmeism. He wrote an essay titled "On Beautiful Clarity." He did not like writing that was too dark or hard to understand. He wanted writers to be logical and precise. He believed in using words carefully and clearly. This was a big shift from the Symbolist style. His first collection of poetry, called Seti, came out in 1908. His novel Wings also became very popular and famous.

In his later years, Kuzmin worked as a translator. He spent much of his time translating Shakespeare's plays into Russian. His last book of poetry was called The Trout Breaks the Ice. It was published in 1929. Kuzmin died of pneumonia in 1936 in Leningrad. He died while living in poverty. Many people believe his work changed Russian poetry forever. He moved literature toward personal details and everyday words. His style helped all the poets who came after him.
