Yevgeny Mravinsky was a famous music leader from Russia. He was a conductor, a pianist, and a teacher. He taught students at the Leningrad State Conservatory.

As a conductor, he led large groups of musicians. He helped the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra become famous worldwide. People loved hearing them play Russian music. Mravinsky led the orchestra for many years. He started this job in October 1938. He stayed in this role until he died.

Leading an orchestra is a very special skill. Mravinsky had a very calm look while he worked. He often led the musicians without using a baton. A baton is a thin stick that conductors use. He used simple and clear hand movements instead. He wanted to feel the mood of the music. He called this feeling "atmospherization." He tried to understand what the composer intended. He did this by soaking in the music's atmosphere.

Mravinsky's life began in Saint Petersburg. His father, Alexandr, died in 1918. That same year, young Yevgeny worked backstage at the Mariinsky Theatre. He worked as a ballet répétiteur there. He first studied biology at a university. Later, he entered the Leningrad Conservatory in 1924. A relative named Alexandra Kollontai helped him enter. He was a student who did not pay fees. His first time conducting for the public was in 1929.

He worked closely with a composer named Dmitri Shostakovich. Mravinsky led the very first performances of many works. These are called world premieres. He led the premieres of Shostakovich's Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, and Twelfth symphonies. Shostakovich even dedicated his Eighth Symphony to Mravinsky. He also led the premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's Sixth Symphony. Mravinsky made many recordings in studios. He recorded music by Tchaikovsky in Vienna and London. His final recording was in April 1984.

Mravinsky traveled to many different countries. He toured Finland and Czechoslovakia in 1946. He visited the United Kingdom in 1960. He also traveled to Japan in May 1973. His last trip to a foreign land was in 1984. He led his very last concert on March 6, 1987. That program included music by Schubert and Brahms. Mravinsky died in Leningrad in 1988. He was 84 years old at that time.
