He was born in Saint Petersburg in the Russian Empire. He was the second of three children in his family. Shostakovich showed great musical talent at a very young age. He started taking piano lessons when he was only nine years old. He had a remarkable memory for music. He could remember exactly what his mother played during a lesson. Sometimes he would play that music while pretending to read something else.

Shostakovich learned to write music at a professional school. He entered the Petrograd Conservatory when he was just 13 years old. He studied many different things like piano and composition. He also learned how to lead an orchestra, which is called conducting. In 1925, he conducted a performance of a piece by Beethoven. His classmates said he focused very hard on the music. He used his hands to show the players how to play. He paid close attention to the speed and the volume.

This opera was a big success at first. However, the Soviet government later criticized it. This made his career very difficult for a few years.

His life was sometimes hard because of the government in the Soviet Union. In 1936, leaders like Joseph Stalin visited his opera. After that, newspapers wrote bad things about his music. They said his sounds were muddled or confusing. In 1948, he faced more trouble under a rule called the Zhdanov Doctrine. Even with these hard times, he stayed a member of important groups. He received awards like the Order of Lenin.
