Stravinsky grew up in a musical home near Saint Petersburg. He spent much of his early life with his siblings. He was very close to his younger brother, Gury. Stravinsky is seen as a key figure in modernist music. This means he helped change how music sounded in the 20th century.

Stravinsky learned music in several important steps. He studied piano and music theory as a young boy. He even attended rehearsals at the Mariinsky Theater. Later, he studied law at the University of Saint Petersburg. While there, he met the famous composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Rimsky-Korsakov became his teacher and advisor. Stravinsky also learned to read music very quickly. He could read vocal scores from his father's library. These lessons helped him build a strong musical foundation.

His career changed many times over the years. First, he had a Russian period from 1913 to 1920. During this time, he used Russian folk songs and poetry.

Next, he entered a neoclassical period from 1920 to 1951. In this stage, he used older styles like the sonata form. He also wrote music about Greek myths. Finally, he had a serial period from 1954 to 1968. He used a new method called the twelve-tone technique. This technique was used by composers like Arnold Schoenberg.

Many famous works helped make Stravinsky a star. An impresario named Sergei Diaghilev asked him to write ballets.

He wrote The Firebird in 1910 and Petrushka in 1911. His 1913 ballet, The Rite of Spring, was very different. Its new rhythms were so surprising they caused a near-riot.

He also wrote works like the Octet in 1923. His very last major work was Requiem Canticles in 1966. This piece was played at his funeral.

Stravinsky's ideas changed music for many other people. He lived in Russia, France, and the United States.

His work influenced many other great composers. These included Aaron Copland and Philip Glass. People were often surprised by his many different styles. However, experts later saw his versatility as a great strength. In 1998, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people of the century. He died in New York City on April 6, 1971.
