Modernism (music)

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Modernism is a very exciting time in music history. It was a period of big changes in how music sounds. Composers wanted to try new ideas and find new ways to express themselves. This period is often called an era of innovation. Innovation means finding new and better ways to do things. Instead of following old rules, musicians looked for brand new paths. They wanted their music to match the fast-changing world around them.

Musicians changed many parts of how music is built. They looked closely at melody, which is the main tune. They also changed rhythm, or the beat of the music. Some composers changed harmony, which is how different notes sound together. One way they did this was by rejecting tonality. Tonality is the traditional way of organizing notes. Arnold Schoenberg used a new method called twelve-tone music. Igor Stravinsky also tried new things by moving away from symmetrical rhythms.

This era began around the year 1890. Many experts believe it lasted until about 1930. Some historians think it ended after the two world wars. A music scholar named Carl Dahlhaus said the purest form ended by 1910. He noticed a big breakthrough in the music of Mahler, Strauss, and Debussy. Richard Strauss wrote a famous piece called Don Juan in 1888. This piece showed the breakaway mood that started the modern era.

Modernism was unique because no single style was the leader. This is called linguistic plurality. This means many different musical languages lived together at once. There were many different styles like Expressionism and Neoclassicism. Some music used a style called Futurism. Others used the Mythic Method or Hyperrealism. These styles helped composers test the limits of what music could be. Each style offered a different way to hear the world.

Modern music often mirrors what is happening in our minds. Composers used sound to show deep psychological states. They wanted to represent how people think and feel. This music also reflected the progress of science and new technology. It showed the growth of big cities and new industries. Even some popular music has used these ideas. For example, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys made 'Good Vibrations' in 1966. He wanted it to sound very modern and advanced.
