Contemporary dance is a way of moving that focuses on new ideas.

It became a major style for trained dancers in the mid-twentieth century. You can find it all over the world today. It is very popular in Europe and the United States. This dance is not just one single way of moving. Instead, it is a mix of many different styles. It borrows from ballet, modern dance, and even jazz. It can also use social or cultural dances from around the world.

How does a dancer move in this style? They combine different skills to create something unique. Dancers use the strong legwork you see in ballet. They also use the torso movements found in modern dance. They might use floor work or a technique called contract-release. Some dancers use improvisation, which means they make up moves as they go. You might see sudden changes in speed or direction. This makes the dance feel unpredictable and exciting to watch.

History shows us how this style broke away from old rules. Merce Cunningham was a very important person in this movement. He was the first to have an independent attitude toward modern dance. In 1944, he worked with musician John Cage. They showed that dance did not always need a clear story. Cunningham started his own dance company in 1953. He created more than one hundred and fifty works for them. In Germany, a style called Tanztheater, or "dance theater," also appeared. This style used everyday moves to bridge art and daily life.

Many famous people helped shape these dance techniques. Choreographers like Paul Taylor created their own styles of movement. His Taylor technique is still taught at schools like The Ailey School. Another creator, William Forsythe, changed how people think about ballet. He used things like film, song, and even electronic sounds. He even used amplified noises made by the dancers themselves. Dancers also train using other methods like yoga or Pilates. This helps them prepare their bodies for such complex work.

Today, contemporary dance keeps looking toward the future. It uses new technology to explore what it means to be human.

For example, a dancer named Amy LaViers used cell phones in a piece. This helped people think about how much we rely on technology. Some dancers even work with robots in their performances. The dance can be about big ideas like identity or being present. It is a way to show feelings that are hard to describe with words. It remains a living, changing way to express the human experience.
