Contemporary ballet is a unique way to dance.

It mixes the rules of classical ballet with modern dance. Dancers still use classical ballet steps and pointe shoes. However, they have more freedom with their upper bodies. They do not have to follow strict body lines. They can use floor work and turn their legs inward. This style also shows off how flexible the body can be.

Many people helped create this style over time.

A Russian producer named Serge Diaghilev is credited with its true origin. He wanted to combine painting, music, and theater. He started the Diaghilev's Russian Ballet Company in 1909. George Balanchine was one of his famous choreographers. Balanchine created a style called neoclassical ballet. He used different clothes like leotards and tunics. He even used "powder puff" tutus instead of flat ones.

Training for this dance is a very big job.

Dancers must first learn classical ballet technique. Then they study modern dance to become versatile. They often use cross training to stay healthy. Many dancers do Pilates or yoga to loosen muscles. This helps their spines stay supple and grounded. Dancers must work hard to avoid ankle injuries from fast footwork.

Famous dancers and creators have shaped the art.

Mikhail Baryshnikov trained with Balanchine and learned his style. Later, Baryshnikov worked with the modern creator Twyla Tharp. Tharp made famous pieces like "Push Comes To Shove" in 1976. She also worked with The Joffrey Ballet in 1973. Other important names include John Butler and Glen Tetley. These artists experimented by mixing different dance methods together.

Today, you can find this dance all over the world. Many big companies perform contemporary ballet now. These include the Nederlands Dans Theater and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Some dancers wear pointe shoes for a show. Others might dance in ballet slippers or even bare feet. They can dance to classical music or even pop music. It is a very versatile way to express art.
