Ballet dancer

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A ballet dancer is a person who practices the art of classical ballet. Both males and females can become professional dancers. They must spend many years in intense training to master the art. This training helps them build extreme flexibility and muscular strength. Dancers also work hard to gain great motor control. Their main goal is to make very difficult moves look easy and smooth.

Training usually begins when a child is between seven and ten years old. Dancers learn through different systems like the Russian Vaganova method. They might also study the Italian Cecchetti method or the British Royal Academy of Dance. A standard class has two main parts. First, dancers use a wooden rail called a barre for balance. They perform exercises like pliés to warm up their muscles. Next, they move to the centre to do jumps and turns without support.

History shows that ballet has changed a lot over time. In the 17th century, it began in the French court under King Louis XIV. Back then, ballet was mostly done by men. A top male dancer was called a danseur noble. Female dancers did not reach the same professional status until the late 1600s. By the 19th century, the Romantic era made female dancers the center of the stage. This was when pointe work became very popular.

Different dancers have different roles and special skills. Female dancers often progress to pointe work around age twelve. They use reinforced shoes to dance on the very tips of their toes. Male dancers often focus on grand allegro, which means high jumps. They also learn pas de deux to lift and support their partners. In large companies, dancers have many ranks. Some are called soloists, while others are in the corps de ballet. The highest rank is often called a principal dancer.

Because ballet uses unnatural body positions, it can be hard on the body. Dancers can suffer from injuries to their feet, hips, or back. For example, dancing on pointe is very strenuous on the ankles. Some dancers use extra training like yoga or swimming to stay strong. Many modern companies even have their own doctors and health suites. The Australian Ballet even created a special calf rise exercise to help prevent injuries. This exercise is now used by ballet companies all over the world.
