A ballet dancer is a person who does classical ballet. Both males and females can be dancers. They train for many years to gain strength. They also work to gain flexibility and control.

Training often starts when a child is seven to ten. Dancers learn different styles. These include the Vaganova method from Russia. They also learn the Cecchetti method from Italy. Most classes have two parts. First, dancers use a wooden rail called a barre. This helps them warm up and find balance. Next, they move to the centre of the room. Here, they do jumps and turns without support.

Female dancers may do pointe work. This means dancing on the tips of their toes. They use special shoes to do this. This usually starts around age twelve. Male dancers often focus on big jumps. They also learn to lift partners in a pas de deux.

Ballet can be hard on the body. Dancers try to make hard moves look easy. This can cause injuries to the feet, hips, or back. To stay safe, many dancers do other exercises. They might try yoga or swimming.
