Carlo Blasis was a famous dancer from Italy.

He was also a great teacher. He taught dance in France, Italy, London, and Russia. He was known for very hard dance classes. Some classes lasted four hours! Blasis used math and science to teach dance. He taught students about a movement axis. This is an invisible vertical line. It helps a dancer find their center of balance.

This helps them look light and graceful.

Blasis wrote books about dance. In one book, he made a list of poses. He called this a dance alphabet. He wanted students to study these poses like words. They could even use small slates to study at home. He also made a famous pose called Attitude. He based it on a statue of Mercury.

Blasis even studied how to spin. He called this a pirouette. He broke the spin into three parts. He wanted dancers to use these steps to show big feelings. He was a very smart man who was ahead of his time.
