Pierina Legnani was a famous Italian dancer. She was a ballerina.

She was born in Milan in 1863. She studied at a place called La Scala. She learned many skills there. Later, she moved to St Petersburg. She danced at the Maryinsky Theatre. She was a prima ballerina assoluta. This was a very high title. She was one of only two dancers to get it.

Legnani was known for her great skill. She danced in many shows. She played Cinderella in 1893. She also danced in Swan Lake in 1895. She was the first to do 32 fouettés en tournant. These are fast spins done on the tips of the toes. This move shows a dancer's strength. It is a very hard thing to do.

Today, dancers still do these spins. They do them in the Black Swan solo. Legnani retired in 1901. She lived in a villa by Lake Como. She even helped at the La Scala Ballet School. She died in 1930 at age 67.
