Filippo Taglioni was a famous dancer from Italy. He was also a ballet master. A ballet master is a person who makes up dances. He lived in many places like Sweden, France, and Germany. He even worked with the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm.

Filippo had a daughter named Marie. She was a very talented dancer. Filippo became her teacher. He was a very strict teacher. He made Marie practice ballet for six hours every day. He wanted her to dance in a new way. He taught her to jump with power. He also taught her how to dance on her toes. This was called pointe work. It was very new at that time.

In 1832, Filippo made a dance called La Sylphide. Marie danced the main part. This dance was a huge success. It helped start a new time for dance called the Romantic period. Many people know a different version of this dance today. That version was made by August Bournonville. However, Filippo was the very first person to make it. He changed the world of dance forever.
