Filippo Taglioni was a famous Italian dancer and ballet master. A ballet master is someone who creates dance routines. He lived a busy life traveling across Europe. He worked in many places like Italy, Austria, Sweden, and Germany.

He even danced for the Paris Opera. He was a pioneer in a new style of ballet. This style changed the art of dance forever. His work helped start the Romantic period of dance. This was a time when dance became very special.

Filippo was a very strict teacher to his daughter, Marie. He wanted her to be a great dancer. He made her practice ballet for six hours every day. They did this for six months.

He taught her to jump with lightness. He also taught her pointe work. This is dancing on the very tips of the toes. This was a very new way to dance back then. He was very tough on her during her training.

Filippo was born in Milan on November 5, 1777. His father was named Carlo Taglioni.

He learned to dance from teachers named Carlo Blasis and Jean-François Coulon. He started performing when he was 17 years old. He moved to Sweden and married Sophie Karsten in 1803. They had two children named Marie and Paul. They moved to Paris to stay safe during the Napoleonic wars. He lived a long life and died in 1871.

In 1832, Filippo created a famous ballet called La Sylphide.

It premiered at the Paris Opera on March 12, 1832. The music was by Jean Madeleine Schneitzhoeffer. Marie Taglioni danced the lead role. The show was a huge success. It made Marie a very famous prima ballerina. It also made Filippo a famous choreographer. Many people today know a different version by August Bournonville. But Filippo was the very first person to make it.

Filippo's work connects to the ballets we see today. His daughter Marie became a star of the Romantic period.

They traveled to many places like Russia to perform. Even though his original dance moves were lost, people still try to recreate them. In 1972, a man named Pierre Lacotte made a new version. He used old papers to help him. This allowed people to see his style again. His life shows how much work goes into great art.
