She was a central figure in the history of European dance. Many people remember her for her beautiful and light style. She is credited with being the first ballerina to truly dance en pointe. This means dancing on the very tips of the toes. This technique helped her look airy and graceful on stage. She performed in great places like the Paris Opera Ballet.

Training to be a star was a very hard job. Marie moved to Vienna with her family when she was young. Her father, Filippo Taglioni, was a famous dance teacher. He made a strict six-month plan to help her improve. She practiced for four hours every single day. In the morning, she did two hours of leg exercises. In the afternoon, she spent two hours on slow, graceful movements. She worked hard to make her body strong and flexible.

Marie was born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1804. Her family had many talented artists in it. Her father was an Italian choreographer. Her mother, Sophie Karsten, was a Swedish ballet dancer. Her brother, Paul, also became a famous dancer and choreographer. Marie spent most of her life in France and the Austrian Empire. She rose to fame when her father created a ballet called La Sylphide in 1832. This dance was made just to show off her special talent.

Her career took her to many different cities and countries. She danced in Munich, Stuttgart, and London. In 1837, she went to Saint Petersburg, Russia, to join the Imperial Ballet. She was so popular there that fans once bought her used pointe shoes. One group of fans even tried to cook the shoes with sauce! In 1845, she performed in a famous ballet called Pas de Quatre. This show featured four great dancers and was seen by Queen Victoria.

She was almost eighty years old when she passed away. Even today, her work is remembered by dancers everywhere. Many dancers leave their worn pointe shoes on her grave. It is a way to say thank you to the first dancer to use them.
