arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sylvie Guillem is a famous ballet dancer from France. She is known for her incredible skill and her strong spirit. Many people admire her because she is very independent. Some people even gave her nicknames like "Mademoiselle Non." This was because she had her own way of doing things. She did not always follow what others expected. She wanted her dancing to feel real and true.

Learning to dance was a big journey for her. As a young girl, she actually preferred gymnastics. Her mother was a gymnastics teacher who helped her train. In 1977, she started at the Paris Opera Ballet School. At first, she did not even like ballet very much. Everything changed when she performed in a show. She loved the feeling of the curtain going up.

Her career grew very quickly as she got older. In 1983, she won a special prize in Varna. Later that same year, she got her first solo role. She danced as the Queen of the Dryads. In 1984, she became an étoile at the Paris Opera Ballet. An étoile is the highest rank for a female dancer. This made her the youngest person to reach that rank.

Sylvie danced in many famous stories and styles. She performed in classics like Swan Lake and Giselle. She also moved into contemporary dance later in her life. This is a more modern way of moving. In 2001, she became the first winner of the Nijinsky Prize. This award is for the best ballerina in the world. She also won many other honors, like the Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur.

Even after she stopped performing, her life remained busy. She went on a big farewell tour in 2015. Her very last dance happened in Japan. She performed as the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve. Now, she lives in a beautiful place in Italy. Her home has two art studios and many olive trees. She also cares deeply about the environment.
