She is known as a prima ballerina, which is a top rank for dancers. Many people call her the finest ballerina of her generation in the West. She is famous for her skill and her beautiful way of dancing. People love to watch her perform classical roles. Two of her most famous roles are Odette/Odile in Swan Lake and the character Giselle. Her dancing has set high standards for others to follow.

To become a great dancer, Natalia had to study very hard. She was born in Leningrad in the Soviet Union. At age 12, she auditioned for the Leningrad Choreographic School. This school was formerly known as the Imperial Ballet School. Most students join this school at age 9, so she started a bit later. After school, she became a member of the Kirov Ballet. She worked there from 1956 until 1970. She reached the rank of prima ballerina during the 1960s.

In 1970, Natalia made a big change in her life. While she was on tour in London, she defected to the West. This means she chose to leave her home country to live elsewhere. Soon, she began dancing with the American Ballet Theatre in New York City. She also joined the Royal Ballet in London. She wanted to try new things by dancing modern ballets. However, she stayed most famous for her classical dance roles. She even performed on television shows like the BBC series Arena.

Natalia has won many important awards for her amazing work. In 1983, she won a Tony Award for being an actress in a musical. This was for her part in the Broadway show On Your Toes. She also won a Laurence Olivier Award in London for that same show. Other awards include a Gold Medal from the Varna International Ballet Competition in 1965. In 2012, she received the Kennedy Center Honor. She has also won many prizes for her work in different countries.

Today, Natalia does not dance on stage anymore. She had to retire because of injuries to her knees. Even though she stopped dancing, she is still very busy. She is now a choreographer, which is a person who creates dance steps. She teaches famous ballets like Sleeping Beauty and La Bayadère to companies all over the world. She even wrote a book and a film called Makarova Returns. She also donated her old dance shoes and costumes to the Kirov Museum.
